FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

The FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions were assembled from the questions most commonly asked by students. You can find further information under the other menu items.

1) I want to attend the specialization in Business Mathematics, but I'm in the old curriculum. Is it possible to attend this specialization?

No, the specialization in Business Mathematics is restricted to students in the new curriculum.

2) How can I register for the placement test?

To successfully register for the placement test, you have to upload the consolidated grade record and a letter of motivation as pdf-documents on our homepage, as well as fill in your Mathematics and Statistics grades. If there occur permanent problems while uploading your documents, please send them in the format <matriculation number>-record.pdf and <matriculation number>-motiv.pdf to wimath@wu.ac.at.

3) I have registered for the placement test, but I still don't have a corresponding entry either in the LPIS or Learn@WU?

You can look up the status of your registration on the registration page. If you have registered successfully, you'll get a confirmation e-mail with time and location of the placement test on the last day of the sign-up period. This information is neither shown on LPIS nor on Learn@WU! Only the regular courses are shown on LPIS and on Learn@WU.

4) How much time has been allocated for the placement test?

The time for the test is 60 min. The placement test contains only open questions.

5) What kinds of resources are allowed for the test?

The questions will not require the use of any calculator. Other resources, like a formulary or transcripts are also not permitted and their use will be penalized with elimination of the test. Don't forget your student ID, it will be needed to confirm your identity.

6) What subject area will be tested?

The tested areas are Chapters 1 to 5 from the "Mathematik Grundlagen"-script or from Elliot Mendelson. The test examples are for practice, they are not meant as a questionnaire.
Chapter 6 is not part of the tested area, but it is recommended to prepare it for the first course.

7) Is there more than one placement test?

10) I have passed the placement test and have been accepted, but I changed my mind and do not want to do the specialization in Business Mathematics any longer. Am I able to sign off the specialization and if yes, how?

You can sign off from the specialization until the first lesson, just contact Paul Eisenberg or Prof. Josef Leydold. After the start of the first lesson it is not possible anymore.

11) How many semester hours are included in this specialization? How many semesters does it take?

During the winter term, the specialization offers the courses Analysis and Linear Algebra (4 semester hours) and Computing (2 semester hours) and during the summer term Probability (2 semester hours) and Statistics (2 semester hours) are offered. Both semesters have to be passed to successfully complete this specialization. The courses are provided only once a year, so you have to start in the winter term. All courses are held in English.
